Bio: Linnaeus Bolling

Linnaeus Bolling was born on the 10th of July 1822 to Robert M Bolling and Sarah Hobson of Willow Hill in Buckingham county Virginia. His mother died when he was about age twelve. He had the opportunity to attend Hampden-Sydney College near Farmville Virgina, about thirty miles from the family home. Linnaeus Bolling was styled as a medical doctor, and he probably received his training at the University of Virginia, where he is shown as a student in 1846. The university had established their program of medical studies by 1825.

Linnaeus Bolling practiced both farming and doctoring. The University of Virginia record suggests that he established his family near Bolling's Landing on the south side of the James River; near the joining of the counties of Buckingham, Cumberland, and Fluvanna. Researcher and blogger, Joane Yeck, has a brief but interesting post about Bolling's Landing on her blog - Slate River Ramblings. She gives this key to the Bolling's Landing location:

Local historian Richard Nicholas described the location as "a little less than 1.5 miles upriver from the mouth of the Hardware River, a few hundred feet above where Little George Creek empties into the James River on the Buckingham side. The landing was directly across the river from the railway siding that is now called Paynes (Fluvanna County)."

Amanda Harris became the wife of Linnaeus in 1851. She was born about 1830, daughter of John "Jack" Harris and Eveline Moseley. They were the parents of eleven identified children.

Further notes from Pam Garrett on the research of others:

I have recently (2015) been in correspondence with Patt Freedman who has shared her interesting work on the Bolling family at the FindAGrave website. She is a descendant of Robert Bolling and his first wife Sarah Hobson, through their son Linnaeus Bolling. She has worked to document the burial locations for descendants of Robert Markham Bolling and his three wives (Sarah Hobson, Mary Watkins, Frances Brackett) and four children (Dr Linneaus Bolling, Pochontas Bolling Meredith, Robert Bolling, Susan Bolling Cobb) Some of Patt's information is speculative, but it provides a helpful picture of this family. Some wonderful family photos are included at FindAGrave. Patt has particularly worked in these cemeteries:
Bolling-Cobb, Willow Hill Cemetery, Buckingham County Virginia; earliest family members (speculative)
Bolling Farm Cemetery, Buckingham County Virginia; Dr Linneaus Bolling and Amanda Harris family
Bolling Cook Cemetery, Buckingham County Virginia; descendants of Dr Linneaus Bolling and Amanda Harris
Mount Tabor Cemetery, Buckingham County Virginia; Cobb family descendants

Readers will enjoy the Slate River Ramblings Blog of Joanne Yeck. She has written extensively on the "stomping grounds" of the Linneaus Bolling family. Blog posts of particular interest include:
