Bio: Mary C Burch
Mary C Burch was born about 1804, probably in Amelia county Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of Cheadle Burch and Judith Markham. Her father died when she was a child. Sometime around 1815 Mary's family left Virginia for Giles county Tennessee, and it is not known if her father died in Virginia or Tennessee. By the 1820 census, Mary Burch is living with her widowed mother in Giles county Tennessee. A few years later, on the 4th of February 1823, she is married to John Edwards.
Dr John Edwards and his wife Mary Burch lived in the northeast corner of Giles county Tennessee, probably in or near the town of Cornersville (Comersville). This area was eventually taken in by Marshall county Tennessee.
Family accounts indicate that John and Mary Edwards had only one daughter, Sarah Antonette Edwards, born about 1830. But, the 1840 census suggests three daughters. I continue to be curious about a Mary Edwards who was born about 1827, and who married Thomas Burgess about 1847 in Giles county Tennessee. In comparing the 1850 and 1860 census, it is suggested that Mary Edwards Burgess might be a daughter of Mary Burch Edwards. Mary Edwards has been indicated in this database as a daughter of John Edwards and Mary Burch, but more work is needed.
The death of Dr John Edwards was reported in the Nashville Christian Advocate in April of 1860. He is buried in the Beechwood Cemetery in Cornersville, Marshall county Tennessee. There is no indication that his wife, Mary Burch Edwards is buried with him.
I suspect, but am not certain, that Mary Burch Edwards (age 55, widow) is living with the family of Thomas and Mary Edwards Burgess in the 1860 census of Giles county Tennessee. This same family lived next door to John and Mary Burch Edwards in the 1850 census. I have not been able to locate Mary Burch Edwards after the 1860 census.
A comment on the Edwards family by Pamela Hutchison Garrett -
I have located some very interesting information on John Edwards, husband of Mary C Burch. There are a couple of things that continue to raise questions. I believe that John Edwards, was the son of Gray Edwards and Elizabeth Lanier Croft of Brunswick county Virginia. His family moved from Virginia to Alabama and then to Giles county Tennessee just after 1800. His sister, Martha Hansford Edwards, married Henry Scales and their daughter, Elizabeth Scales, married Bernard Markham Burch, brother of Mary C Burch. Several databases I have seen at World Connect show that John Edwards, son of Gray Edwards and Elizabeth Lanier Croft, married Nancy Brown and had three children. I have not resolved this conflict. The thing of great interest to me is the connection of the Edwards family to the Burch family in Brunswick county Virginia. John Edward's maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Lanier of Brunswick county Virginia. She was married first to Thomas Croft and secondly to John Burch, son of Richard Burch of Brunswick county Virginia.
