Bio: John Markham

The only record known for John Markham is a mention in the will of his father, George Markham, in 1800 Chesterfield county Virginia:

To son John, if he returns to this country, my shares in the Appomattox Company.

It is most likely that John Markham is the son of George Markham and his first wife Sarah Hill who married in Chesterfield county, Virginia in 1774. John Markham has probably reached an age of maturity by 1800, so we might assume that he was born between about 1775-1780. It is difficult to determine the exact meaning of the phrase "if he returns to this country." John Markham may have gone to England or Ireland to study or reside. He may have been an adventurer to new lands, or on the sea. He may have moved off to a new American frontier, and his father is hoping he might return to his Virginia home. No stray John Markham reappears in the Chesterfield-Amelia county Virginia area after 1800. Nothing further is known about him.
