Bio: Catherine Traylor

Catherine Markham Traylor was born on the 1st of May 1780. Her father, Captain Archer Traylor had served with Virginia during the Revolutionary War and her parents had been married in the previous year. Little is known of her childhood and youth, but on the 14th of April 1806 she was married to John Robertson in Chesterfield county Virginia. Her father gave consent and offered surety. The ceremony was performed by Rev Thomas LaFon (Baptist minister) of the Church of Christ. Catherine Traylor was about twenty-five years of age when she married.

In 1968, Joseph S Gresham published his very excellent book, "The Robertsons of Winterpock: A Study of the Ancestors and The Descendants of John and Catherine Traylor Robertson of Winterpock, Virginia". It is interestingly written, filled with excellent information, and should be read by descendants of this family branch. It has been an invaluable resource in learning more about this line. In this database I have included a chapter from Gresham's book which gives detail to the life of the Robertson family.

John Robertson and Catherine Traylor lived in the Winterpock area of Chesterfield county Virginia. Their home may have been "Mt Ida". They had six identified children: Benjamin M Robertson, Francis Henry Robertson, Joseph A Robertson, John Robertson III, Judith Ann Robertson, and James Gaston Robertson. Catherine Traylor Robertson died on the 30th of December 1821, leaving her children all in childhood - between the ages of four and thirteen. They must have loved her well, for many years later, her oldest and youngest sons erected a monument to her memory in the family cemetery, with the rememberance - "an affectionate mother".

Six years passed before John Robertson married again. In September of 1827 he was married to Matilda Vaughn. I have no record of children. John Robertson is buried in Farmville, Prince Edward county Virginia in 1843. He may have been living there with one of his children. His tombstone at the Westview Cemetery reads:

In Memory of John Robertson; born in Chesterfield Co; 14 June 1780; died May 25th 1843; He died as he had lived and honest man, and worthy member of the Baptist Church.
