About This Site
What is the website about?
Markham of Chesterfield was opened on the web in January 2015 to share family history with cousins, friends and genealogists. It tells the story of John Markham who was born in County Kilkenny Ireland just after 1700, and died in Chesterfield county Virginia in 1770. It includes evidence and stories related to his ancestors, descendants, and allied families.
How do I get started?
In January 2015 the website began with information on the main character, John Markham, and his wife, children, and grandchildren. As time permits, details on his ancestors - Mathews, Fletcher, Bernard, Briscoe, and Vincent - will be added. That will be followed by the stories of later descendants and allied familes, including the surnames of Patteson, Burch, Hubard, Bolling, Hutchins, and many others.
The central feature of the website is the database. It is fully searchable, using the search engine on the website. Try putting your great-grandfatherís name in the Search boxes; or try your great-grandmotherís maiden name. You can also click on the Surnames link in the left-side navigation bar to find a familiar name in the database.
Who is the site coordinator?
The database provides a page on each individual, and it also shows how each individual connects to their parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. Charts can be produced to see ancestors and descendants of each individual in the database.
The individual pages give vital details (ie. dates and locations for births, marriages, and deaths). Links are also available on some individual pages to photographs, biographies, stories, documents, and other items that bring life to the Markham family.
If the database search doesnít get you started, try some of the other links on the left-side navigation bar. The links for Features, Biographies, Sketches, Photos and Documents will produce a list of items available on the website.
The Markham of Chesterfield website was created by, and is maintained by, Pamela Hutchison Garrett. It is the result of almost forty years of research on the Markham family. If you would like to know more about Pam Garrett and her family history work, click here.
