    • [pam garrett's comment] Over my years of research I have looked at several Mathews individuals and families that I thought might lead to the Ancestors of Catherine Mathews, wife of John Markham. My notes have become so unwieldy that I have felt need of entering these people, individually, into my database. William Mathews of Evesham Worcestershire England came to my attention, primarily because his daughter Mary Mathews married a man named Henry Vincent. A closer look at this family has not revealed any likely links to my own Peter Mathews.

Brief outline of the family of William Mathews of Evesham, Worcestershire, England:

William Mathews, born about 1608, married Mary Toney in 1633, and died 23 October 1672 at Evesham, Worcestershire England, and is buried at All Saints Church, Evesham. He probably served as Mayor of Evesham.

      Children:
      1. Mary Mathews, born about 1635, married Henry Vincent, son of John Vincent and Hannah Allerton of Honeshole, England. This family removed to Harwich, Barnstable county Massachusetts, where Henry Vincent died in 1722. (no identity for Honeshole)

      2. John Mathews, born about 1637
Sir John Mathews was a London merchant, who was Knighted 17 April 1677, app. Alderman of Evesham by the new charter 12 June 1684, was Mayor 1685, and M.P. 1685-7, and 1689-90. (Probably son of William Mathews, Mayor of Evesham 1662).

      3. Thomas Mathews, born about 1638
Thomas Mathews's Charity; Church Table: Mr. Thomas Mathews, by his last Will, dated 20th November 1672, gave 51- per annum to set apprentice poor children born and bred Charity, in the parish of All Saints, by the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the said parish, and to be paid out of houses and lands in Evesham, viz. the house late in possession of Mr. Caves, and now in the possession of Mr. Higgs in the High-street; two tenements in the possession of John Baylis and James Ralter in the Britain-street; a close in the East Fields, called Mathews's Ground, being seven acres, all formerly sold by one lease to William Mathews, father of the testator.
