Notes |
- James Mathews was probably the youngest child of Vincent Mathews and Catalina Abeel. He was born about 1742 in Orange county New York. We have few specific details of his childhood, but it seems likely that he had many advantages. The high percentage of lawyers, judges, representatives and doctors among Vincent Mathew's sons and sons-in-law suggests that they had access to more than a common education for the time. Unlike his brothers, who entered law and politics, James Mathews chose the life of the land. On the 18th of February 1762 he married Hannah Strong, daughter of Selah Strong and Hannah Woodhull.
During America's Revolutionary War, James Mathews and his brothers (David Mathews and Fletcher Mathews) held Loyalist sympathies. All three were arrested in June of 1776 on suspicion of participating in a Tory plot. Susan Sayre Galsworth, in her 1922 book titled "Ancestry and descendants of Hannah Mathews Towar", gives interesting insights into James Mathews course of action:
James Mathews, the other brother, was also suspected, but he came promptly forward and made public pledge of his loyalty to the colonial cause; he was fortunate in the fact that he had married the daughter of Selah Strong, of Long Island. Hannah Strong, whose brother Major Nathaniel, was making a record for himself by his activities against the Tories. With his wife's father and brother as well as his own father offering security for his good faith, he had no difficulties in impressing his judges with his innocence of any share in the plot, and he further displayed his devotion to the Revolutionary government by losing all his property in its service. He was acting as sub-contractor for supplies for the troops at West Point, and because of the failure of his principal in the contract was forced to sign away most of his land - and, like all the Mathewses, he was a large landholder - to meet his obligations to the government. Whether this had anything to do with his change of home is not known, but not long after, he moved into the "Far West," so called then, to a farm near what is now Elmira, New York, in 1816.

Sarah Mathews (1779-1830); married Samuel S Haight

James Mathews died in 1816, while living in Elmira, Chemung county New York. We do not have a date of death for Hannah Stong Mathews, neither do we know where either are buried.
