  • Notes
    • Bridget Mathews was born in 1780 in Orange county New York, the youngest daughter of James Mathews and Hannah Strong. She removed with her family to Elmira in Chemung county New York. This was probably the location of her 1802 marriage to William Lowe. The location of their home is not certain, but they may have lived primarily in Cortland, Courtland county New York, where William Lowe practiced law. At the time of William Lowes death in 1832 he was located at Olean Point in Cattaraugus county New York.

The children of Bridget Mathews and William Lowe were:
      Catherine Julia Lowe
      Hannibal Allen Lowe
William Fletcher Lowe, 1819-1890, married Elsie Aquilla Smith

At the University of Rochester, River Campus Library, there is an interesting collection (Manuscripts and Special Collections) titled "Lowe Family Papers", following descendants of William Lowe and Bridget Mathews. A brief introductory statement -
Lowe Family Genealogy, compiled September 1933. 10p. The Lowe genealogy begins with Cornelius Lowe (or Low), born 1750 in Hunterdon County, NJ of Dutch descent. In 1777 he married Catherine McKinney. Their two surviving sons were Mordecai (b. 1779) and William (b.1782). William married Bridget Mathews, and their third child was William Fletcher Lowe (b. 1819 at Bath, NY). The collection consists of genealogical data and letters, accompanied by transcripts, which relate to the Lowe and Smith families of western New York and to family life in the early 1800s. The material has been gathered by Jesse Lowe Smith (1869-1934), Superintendent of Schools in Highland Park, IL, and in the 1960s by Blanche Beal Lowe, whose husband, Harvey J. Lowe, was Jesse Smith's cousin.
Ten letters, identified as "personal correspondence involving the immediate family of Bridget Mathews Lowe", are included.

William Lowe died in 1832, and Bridget Mathews Lowe was secondly married to Rev Daniel Ward Eastman. This marriage must have occurred after 1844, the year of death for Rev Eastman's first wife. Bridget Mathews Lowe Eastman died in 1853.

There is a thoughtful and interesting biography of Daniel Ward Eastman in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Volume 9, 1860 (available online). The article was written by George L Douglas, and the introductory paragraph gives these details:
Daniel Ward Eastman, Presbyterian minister; b. 2 Sept. 1778 in Goshen Township (N.Y.), third child of Tilton Eastman and Polly Owen; m. first, on 21 Nov. 1800, Elizabeth Hopkins (d. 1844), by whom he had nine or ten children, secondly, Mrs Bridget Lowe (d. 1853), and thirdly, Margaret Hinton, née Merritt; d. 4 Aug. 1865 in Grimsby Township (West Lincoln Township), Canada West.

The Needham Family website gives an excellent account of the family and descendants of Bridget Mathews and William Lowe. Don't miss it!
