Notes |
- Samuel Mathews (jr) was the oldest son of Samuel Mathews and Frances Greville. The elder Samuel Mathews immigrated to Virginia in 1619, and served in a number of important positions in the young colony. Samuel Mathews (jr) was born at his father's plantation, Mathews Manor (later Denbigh) in what became Warwick county Virginia. Details of Samuel Mathews' family connections remain in question. See Capt. Samuel Mathews, of "Denbigh", and Gov. Samuel Mathews at geni.com for some helpful discussion.
Like his father, Samuel Mathews (jr) became a prominent participant in the colony of Virginia. He served as Governor of the Colony from 1656 until he died in office in January, 1660 (1659 AS).
Samuel Mathews (jr) was implicated in our own Mathews family story when the question was asked - whether he could be the colonial governor who was father of Catherine Mathews, the wife of John Markham. But, dating, and other evidence makes him an unlikely candidate.
Samuel Mathews' story is an interesting one. You can read more about him in a Wikipedia article, and in other accounts online.
