[pam garrett's comment] It is of interest to note that in 1850 and 1860 Vincent Mathews is listed as a teacher. In the 1850 census he is living next door to JL Dadd, president of Mercer University. This is John Leadley Dadd, an "influential author, educator, and Baptist clergyman" who served as a professor of theology and then president of Mercer University. A list of faculty at Mercer College does not include the name of Vincent Mathews, but it is worth considering that several of Vincent Mathews' children were buried in the Baptist cemetery in Elmore county Alabama.
