      Extracted from a biography of Guy L Mathews - . . . a son of Lebius Hammond and Harriet (Smith) Mathews. the former of whom was born on the old Mathews farm, on December 22. 18I6, and the latter in Southport, New York, April 20, 1820. Lebius Mathews was a man of fine parts, a progressive farmer, prominent in all neighborhood affairs of general interest, and was frequently approached with offers of political honors, but he invariably refused to accept them, although he was a life-long member of the Democratic party. For many years he was one of the leading members and supporters of the Presbyterian church of his locality. His death occurred April 10, 1900, and he was sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends. On the 3d of May, 1873, his wife had passed into the other life . . .

      Lebbeus H Mathews and Harriett Smith had eleven children, several of whom died as children and young adults. Their seven surving children were Mary Mathews; Emma French Mathews (married Asa Parshall Bovier), Fletcher Conkling Mathews (married Mary Amelia Knapp), Timothy Smith Mathews (married Martha J Mathews); Julia Smith Mathews; Guy L Mathews (married Eva Cooper); and Harriet S Mathews (married John Edward Rawlins).
