- Selah Mathews was the oldest child of James Mathews and Hannah Strong, He was born about 1762, probably in Orange county New York. He married his cousin Mary Strong, daughter of Nathaniel Strong and Amy Brewster. About 1790 Selah Mathews and his wife moved, along with other Mathews family members, to the town of Elmira in Chemung (late Tioga) county New York. Among their children are Frances "Fannie" Mathews (married Joseph Conkling); Henry Haight Mathews (married Isabella Arnot); Rachel Mathews (married Jonas Sayre); Selah Mathews (married Mary Hinsdale, lawyer in Rochester NY); and Robert Mathews (died as young man). They may also have had a son Peter Mathews, who married Lucy Sly. More work needs to be done to confirm this relationship.
Selah Mathews served as Lt Col under General Matthew Carpenter [his brother-in-law], during the War of 1812.
