  • Notes
    • Juliana Strong Mathews was born in 1775 in Orange county New York, daughter of James Mathews and Hannah Strong. She moved with her family to Elmira, Chemung county New York, and married at the age of twenty, to Lazarus Hammond, son of John Hammond and Hannah Tubbs.

The Hammonds started life together in the Dansville area, today south of Rochester New York in the border area of Livington and Steuben counties. Eventually they took up property in the Pleasant Valley area of Steuben county New York. About 1827, when the couple was in their fifties, they divided up their farmland to found the village of Hammondsport in Steuben county New York. The towns of Elmira, Bath, Urbana, and the Village of Hammondsport rest in the same general area of south-central New York. Urbana is noted as the home of the first bonded winery in America, Pleasant Valley Wine Company. Today Hammondsport is noted as a key player in New York's wine culture.

Juliana Mathews and Lazarus Hammond were the parents of ten identified children:
Hannah Hammond (1796-1871); married Capt James Read; resided at Bath, New York.
John Hammond (1798-1817); died at the age of nineteen, and is buried with his parents.
Catherine Hammond (1800-1860); married Samuel Baker; Hammondsport.
Sarah Hammond (b. 1802); married Elias G Holladay; merchant of Indianapolis, Indiana.
James Mathews Hammond (1804-1824); died at the age of nineteen, and is buried with his parents.
Amariah Hammond (b. 1807); married Ann Cooke; merchant in Burlington Iowa.
Samuel Haight Hammond (1809-1878); married Emeline Humphrey; lawyer of Watertown, New York.
Vincent Mathews Hammond (1811-1824); died at age thirteen, and is buried with his parents.
William Strong Hammond (1812-1868); married Eliza Edsall and Catherine Bailey; died at Allegan, Michigan.
Fletcher Mathews Hammond (1815-1847); married Sarah Finley Smith; medical doctor.

Juliana Matthews Hammond died in 1831, and is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hammondsport, Steuben county New York. Lazarus Hammond was secondly married to Mary Prentice. He died in 1848.
